Ernest Hemingway's 'The Old Man and the Sea' is the story of Santiago, a fisherman on a Cuban coast, his tryst with failures, his own emotions and eventually his struggles to land a fish, a Marlin.
The novel is an attempt by Hemingway to paint the intricacies of the human mind vividly.
Santiago is a symbol of the whole of human society, going through various stages of calm, turmoil, endurance and survival. Man's confidence and will to overcome any crisis has been portrayed through Santiago's age and ordeals.
The novel won Hemingway the Pulitzer Prize in 1953.
