Ancient Promises by Jaishree Misra is an exploration into the mundane lives of women in a typical Kerala society. Set in the backdrop of early 90s its protagonist, Janu is the stereotypical half-generation North-Indian Malayali girl that tries to belong to two places while belonging never entirely to either. The book highlights differences in various societies, condemning the notions that run through their framework and make life difficult for an average Indian woman while never really sounding preachy. 

Through its deliciously subtle but touching romance, Ancient Promises is the story of the average Indian girl who cannot hope to have her love fulfilled while striving to meet the demands of the society in hopes of the happily ever after.

വൈരുദ്ധ്യങ്ങൾക്കിടയിലും വികസിച്ച് ലോകശ്രദ്ധ പിടിച്ചു പറ്റിയ കേരളത്തിന്റെ ചിത്രം വരയ്ക്കാനാണ് സാമൂഹ്യ ശാസ്താദ്ധ്യാപകനും ഗവേഷകനുമായ ഡോ. ഇ. തോമസ് ഈ ഗ്രന്ഥത്തിലൂടെ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത്. സാമ്പത്തിക, സാമൂഹിക, രാഷ്ട്രീയ, സാംസ്കാരിക മേഖല ളിൽ അഭൂതപൂർവമായ നേട്ടം, ഒട്ടേറെ പരിത്യങ്ങൾ ക്കിടയിലും, കേരളം കൈവരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. ജീവിതനിലവാരത്തിൽ ഭാരതത്തിലെ മറ്റേതൊരു സംസ്ഥാന ത്തെക്കാളും മുന്നിലെത്തിയ ഈ സംസ്ഥാനം ആളോഹരി വരുമാനത്തിൽ പിന്നിലാണ്, ജീവിതനിലവാരസൂ ചികം പുരോ ഗതി കാണിക്കുന്നുവെങ്കിലും കേരളത്തിലെ ജനങ്ങളുടെ ആരോഗ്യനിലവാരം ഒട്ടും മെച്ചമല്ല ആരോഗ്യകാര്യങ്ങളിലെന്ന പോലെ മറ്റ് സാമൂഹിക, സാംസ്കാരിക മേഖലകളിലും ഈ വൈരുദ്ധ്യം പ്രകടമാണ്. ഉന്നതവിദ്യാഭ്യാസത്തിൽ സ്ത്രീക്കും പുരുഷനും തുല്യപദവി ഉണ്ടെങ്കിലും കുടുംബപരമായ പ്രശ്ന ങ്ങൾ കേരളത്തിൽ ഗുരുതരമാണ്. സാമ്പത്തിക മേഖലയിൽ വ്യവസായവല്ക്കരണം കൂടാതെയുള്ള ഉപഭോഷ്യ സംസ്കാരം ഒരത്ഭുതമായി പരിണമിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു ജോലിയില്ലാത്ത അഭ്യസ വിദ്യരുടെ കാര്യത്തിലും കേരളം പിന്നിലല്ല. ജനായത്ത ഭരണ സമ്പ്രദായം കേരളത്തിന്റെ മണ്ണിൽ വളരെ നേരത്തെതന്നെ വേരോടിയെങ്കിലും ആദർശത്തിന്റെ അസ്തിവാരമിട്ട രാഷ്ടീയ പാർട്ടികൾ വിരളം. കേരളത്തിൽ സാംസ്കാരികസംശ്ലേഷണം നടക്കുമ്പോൾ വിശ്ലേഷണവും സംഭവിക്കുന്നു. ബോധപൂർവ മാണ് ഈ രണ്ടു ചുവടുകളും. അതിന്റെ പിന്നിൽ പ്രവർത്തി ക്കുന്ന സാംസ്കാരിക സംഘടനകൾ പാരമ്പര്യത്തിന്റെ പിൻബലത്തിൽനിന്നും ശക്തിയാർജിക്കുന്നു. കേരളം എന്ന അത്ഭുതത്തിലേക്കുള്ള ഒരന്വേഷണമാണ് കേരളത്തിന്റെ സമൂഹഘടനയും രൂപാന്തരവും,. സാമൂഹിക, രാഷ്ടീയ മാനങ്ങളാണ് ഇതിന്റെ മുഖ്യാ ന്വേഷണ ബിന്ദു.
